Joyce Vance: "It is really a coup."

Writer's picture: Blue LuluBlue Lulu

Joyce Vance, former federal prosecutor and renowned law professor who frequently discusses legal issues on MSNBC writes, "Is it really a coup if it doesn’t feel like one? If your day-to-day life hasn’t changed? Can it be a coup if I can still write posts like this?

What we’ve seen over the last two weeks and accelerating over the weekend looks like a coup, a hostile, undemocratic takeover of government. Merriam-Webster says a coup is “a sudden decisive exercise of force in politics and especially the violent overthrow or alteration of an existing government by a small group.” No violence so far because this is a coup fueled by tech bros, not the military. But we’re watching the alteration of government happen before our eyes."

Yes, it's really a coup.

There are legal ways to accomplish the ends that Elon and his roving band of pimply college student hackers are currently working towards and because the Republicans control all branches of government, they could accomplish their goals legally. But rather than do so, they are engaging in illegal behavior as a way of flaunting their raw power and lawlessness. By doing what they are doing, out in the open for all to see-- they are showing that they are above the law because Trump, also above the law, has allowed them to be. The DOJ with it's newly confirmed, election-denying, Trump worshipping, head in the form of anti-democracy Barbie, Pam Bondi-- has no intention of stopping Musk or Trump. A full supporter of Project 2025, she will work with Kash Patel on accomplishing the goals of the Heritage Foundation by destroying the rule of law and eradicating any dissent.

Democratic lawmakers have appeared to locate their spines but are largely engaging in performative political theater.

The Right wanted a Revolution. It appears they might get one.
